Phonics and Early Reading
Our Vision for Reading
At Helpringham Primary Academy, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking every child's potential. It opens doors to learning, sparks imagination, broadens horizons and empowers children to become confident, independent learners. Reading is at the heart of everything we do and is central to our vision of enabling every child to thrive both academically and personally.
We are committed to ensuring that every child leaves Helpringham as a fluent, confident reader with a genuine love of books. Through high-quality teaching, a carefully sequenced reading curriculum and a rich reading culture, we inspire children to see themselves as readers for life.
Our HEART values underpin our approach to reading. We strive to develop Happy readers who enjoy sharing books and stories, ensure Equality by giving every child the support they need to succeed, nurture Aspiration through exposing children to ambitious vocabulary, diverse literature and inspiring authors, build Resilience as children tackle increasingly challenging texts, and foster Teamwork through shared reading experiences, discussion and collaboration.
Reading is more than a subject; it is a life skill. Whether children are discovering the magic of their first storybook, exploring new worlds through fiction or developing knowledge through non-fiction texts, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and power of reading.
Prioritising Reading at HPA
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum because we recognise that it is the foundation upon which all future learning is built. Children who become fluent, confident readers are better equipped to access the wider curriculum, develop their understanding of the world and achieve their full potential.
As a small school, we know every child exceptionally well. This enables us to identify children's strengths and any barriers to learning quickly, ensuring that support is provided at the earliest opportunity. We believe that every child can become a successful reader and are committed to ensuring that no child is left behind.
From the moment children begin their journey with us, reading is given the highest importance. High-quality texts, storytelling and opportunities to develop language are woven throughout our curriculum, creating an environment where reading is valued, celebrated and enjoyed every day.
Early reading is taught through the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, which provides a consistent, systematic and structured approach to teaching children to decode, read fluently and develop confidence. This strong foundation enables children to progress successfully from learning to read towards reading to learn.
Reading continues to be prioritised throughout Key Stage 2 through reading lessons that develop fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Carefully chosen class novels and high-quality texts enrich the wider curriculum, enabling children to experience a diverse range of authors, genres and perspectives.
Reading extends beyond English lessons and is embedded across every curriculum subject. Children regularly access information texts, historical sources, scientific explanations and rich literary texts, helping them to develop both subject knowledge and a deeper appreciation of language.
We believe that partnership with parents is fundamental to children's success as readers. Families are encouraged to read with their children regularly at home, with an expectation that children read at least five times each week. Reception and Key Stage 1 children take home a carefully matched Read Write Inc. decodable book, enabling them to practise the sounds they have been taught in school, alongside a high-quality reading-for-pleasure book to enjoy together with their family. This balance develops both reading accuracy and a lifelong enjoyment of books.
Parents are further supported through phonics workshops, guidance and regular communication so that school and home work together to develop confident readers.
Staff share a collective commitment to ensuring that reading remains at the forefront of school improvement. Reading provision is carefully monitored through lesson visits, pupil discussions, assessment information and ongoing evaluation to ensure that every child receives the highest quality reading education.
Promoting a Love of Reading
At Helpringham Primary Academy, we believe that children who enjoy reading are more likely to become lifelong readers. Alongside teaching the skills of reading, we are passionate about nurturing curiosity, imagination and a genuine enthusiasm for books.
Reading for pleasure is embedded throughout the life of our school. Every classroom has an inviting reading area where children can browse, recommend and enjoy books in a calm and welcoming environment. Our well-stocked school library offers a wide range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction, poetry, graphic novels and picture books, ensuring that every child can discover books that both reflect their own experiences and introduce them to new ideas, cultures and perspectives.
Adults throughout the school act as enthusiastic reading role models. Teachers regularly read aloud to their classes, sharing high-quality texts that challenge, inspire and captivate children. These shared reading experiences expose pupils to rich vocabulary, ambitious language and authors they may not otherwise encounter, whilst demonstrating the enjoyment that reading brings.
One of the highlights of our week is our ‘Book’ assembly. Each week, children listen to a carefully selected story, often voting for the book they would most like to enjoy together the following week. This gives children ownership over some of the stories they experience, encourages discussion about books and creates excitement around reading across the whole school community. It is an eagerly anticipated event that reflects our belief that reading should be celebrated and shared.
Reading is celebrated in many ways throughout the year. Children are encouraged to recommend books to their peers, share favourite authors and celebrate their reading achievements. Our Reading Ambassadors play an important role in promoting reading throughout the school by encouraging others to explore new books and helping to foster a positive reading culture.
We recognise that children's reading experiences should extend beyond the classroom. Families are encouraged to visit local libraries, participate in reading events and enjoy books together at home. Book fairs, national reading celebrations and themed events further enrich children's experiences and help to demonstrate that reading is something to be enjoyed throughout life.
By creating an environment where books are visible, valued and celebrated, we aim to inspire every child to develop a lifelong love of reading. We want our children to leave Helpringham not only as skilled readers but as children who choose to read for pleasure, who are excited by stories and who recognise reading as a source of enjoyment, knowledge and opportunity.
Making Sure Pupils Make Progress
At Helpringham Primary Academy, we believe that every child can become a successful reader. We maintain the highest expectations for all pupils and carefully monitor their progress to ensure that every child develops the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become a fluent, enthusiastic reader.
Reading progress begins with high-quality daily teaching. Throughout Reception and Key Stage 1, children participate in daily Read Write Inc. phonics lessons that are carefully matched to their stage of learning. Lessons are delivered with fidelity to the programme, ensuring consistency in teaching approaches, routines and expectations. Children are regularly assessed and grouped according to their current reading knowledge so that teaching remains closely matched to their needs.
Assessment is an integral part of our reading provision. Teachers make continual formative assessments during lessons, identifying misconceptions and providing immediate feedback so that errors are addressed before they become embedded. In addition, Read Write Inc. assessments are carried out regularly to monitor children's progress through the programme. Assessment outcomes are used to review teaching groups, identify pupils requiring additional support and celebrate children's achievements.
Once children have secured the foundations of early reading, they continue to develop fluency, vocabulary and comprehension through high-quality reading lessons in Key Stage 2. Reading lessons provide opportunities for pupils to read, discuss and analyse increasingly complex texts, enabling them to deepen their understanding and develop critical thinking skills.
Developing reading fluency remains a key priority throughout the school. We recognise that fluent readers can devote more of their attention to understanding and interpreting what they read. Children therefore revisit and reread texts, practise reading aloud and receive regular opportunities to develop expression, pace and accuracy. As fluency increases, children become more confident readers who are able to access increasingly challenging texts independently.
Vocabulary development is carefully planned across the curriculum. Through high-quality texts, explicit teaching of ambitious vocabulary and rich classroom discussion, children develop the language needed to understand increasingly sophisticated texts and communicate effectively themselves.
Reading progress is reviewed through ongoing teacher assessment alongside more formal assessments at key points throughout the year. Leaders monitor attainment and progress carefully, analysing assessment information to ensure that all groups of pupils achieve well. Where additional support is required, intervention is implemented promptly so that children continue to make strong progress.
Our small school allows us to know every child as an individual reader. We celebrate successes, identify barriers quickly and work closely with children and families to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to flourish as a reader.
Matching Books to Pupils' Reading Ability
One of the most important factors in developing confident readers is ensuring that children read books which closely match their current reading knowledge. At Helpringham Primary Academy, we carefully select books that enable children to experience success whilst providing the right level of challenge to support continued progress.
Children learning through the Read Write Inc. programme take home fully decodable books that are precisely matched to the sounds and words they have already been taught. This enables children to apply their phonic knowledge successfully, building confidence, fluency and independence with every book they read.
Children read each decodable book several times. The first read focuses on accurate decoding, whilst subsequent reads develop increasing fluency, expression and comprehension. This repeated reading allows children to become more automatic in their word recognition, freeing their attention to focus on understanding the text and enjoying the story.
Alongside their decodable reading book, every child in Reception and Key Stage 1 also takes home a carefully selected reading-for-pleasure book. These books are intended to be shared and enjoyed with family members, exposing children to rich language, exciting stories and texts beyond the level they are currently able to decode independently. This approach enables children to experience both success in learning to read and enjoyment in listening to more complex texts.
As children complete the Read Write Inc. programme and become fluent readers, they move on to selecting books independently from an appropriately challenging range of texts. Teachers provide guidance to ensure that children continue to experience both enjoyment and appropriate challenge whilst developing wider reading preferences.
Our classroom reading areas and school library provide children with access to a broad and diverse collection of books, including contemporary fiction, traditional tales, poetry, information texts, biographies, graphic novels and books reflecting a wide range of cultures, experiences and perspectives. We believe every child should be able to see themselves represented in books whilst also discovering lives, places and experiences beyond their own.
Teachers know their pupils well and regularly recommend books that reflect children's interests whilst also broadening their reading horizons. Through these thoughtful recommendations, children develop confidence to explore unfamiliar genres, authors and themes.
By carefully matching books to children's reading ability whilst also promoting reading for pleasure, we ensure that every child experiences success, develops confidence and builds a lifelong enjoyment of reading.
Teaching Phonics from the Start
At Helpringham Primary Academy, we recognise that high-quality phonics teaching provides the essential foundation for learning to read. We teach early reading through Read Write Inc., a rigorous, systematic and evidence-informed phonics programme that enables children to become accurate, fluent and confident readers.
Phonics teaching begins as soon as children are ready in Reception. From the very beginning of their school journey, children are immersed in a language-rich environment where speaking, listening, storytelling, songs and rhymes develop the communication skills that underpin successful reading.
Children participate in daily Read Write Inc. phonics lessons that are fast-paced, engaging and carefully structured. Lessons follow consistent routines, allowing children to build confidence whilst systematically learning the relationships between sounds and letters. Through explicit teaching, partner work and regular opportunities to apply new learning, children quickly develop the skills needed to read unfamiliar words with increasing independence.
Children begin by learning the Set 1 Sounds, developing secure recognition of individual phonemes and beginning to blend sounds into words using Fred Talk. As their confidence grows, they progress through the Set 2 and Set 3 Sounds, enabling them to read increasingly complex words and texts with accuracy and fluency.
Children are taught to decode unfamiliar words using the strategies embedded within Read Write Inc. before progressing towards reading with increasing automaticity and expression. Alongside decoding, children develop comprehension through discussion, prediction, retrieval and vocabulary exploration, ensuring that reading is always purposeful and meaningful.
Read Write Inc. Storybook lessons provide daily opportunities for children to revisit and consolidate their learning through carefully matched texts. These lessons develop not only decoding skills but also fluency, comprehension and a genuine enjoyment of reading. Through repeated reading and partner discussion, children become increasingly confident readers who understand and engage with what they read.
Children are assessed regularly throughout the programme and are regrouped whenever appropriate to ensure that teaching remains closely matched to their stage of development. This responsive approach allows children to make the strongest possible progress and ensures that they receive teaching at exactly the right level.
Consistency is fundamental to the success of Read Write Inc. All staff delivering phonics receive ongoing training and coaching to ensure that lessons are delivered with fidelity to the programme. Shared routines, consistent language and high expectations provide children with a secure and familiar learning environment in which they can thrive.
By establishing strong foundations in phonics from the very beginning, we enable children to become fluent readers who are well prepared for the wider demands of the curriculum and who develop the confidence to read with independence and enjoyment.
Supporting Struggling Readers to Catch Up
At Helpringham Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a successful reader. We recognise that children learn at different rates and that some pupils require additional support to secure the knowledge and skills needed to become fluent, confident readers. Our philosophy is simple: no child is left behind.
Early identification is key. Through daily teaching, regular assessment and close professional dialogue, staff quickly identify pupils who require additional support. Prompt intervention prevents gaps from widening and enables children to continue making strong progress alongside their peers.
Children who require additional support receive carefully planned interventions that are tailored to their individual needs. Where appropriate, we use Read Write Inc. catch-up approaches and other evidence-informed interventions to provide focused teaching that revisits, reinforces and secures essential reading skills. Interventions are delivered by trained adults and are closely monitored to ensure they have a positive impact on children's progress.
Children continue to access high-quality phonics teaching for as long as they need it, regardless of their age or year group. We believe that older pupils who require phonics support deserve the same high expectations and carefully structured teaching as younger children. By providing targeted support, we enable pupils to develop the confidence and fluency required to access the wider curriculum successfully.
Reading fluency remains a key focus for pupils who require additional support. Through repeated reading, guided practice and opportunities to read aloud with skilled adults, children develop increasing automaticity, accuracy and expression. As fluency improves, pupils are better able to focus on understanding and enjoying what they read.
We work closely with parents and carers throughout this process. Families are kept informed of their child's progress and are provided with practical guidance to support reading at home. We believe that a strong partnership between home and school gives children the very best opportunity to succeed.
Our small-school environment enables us to know every child exceptionally well. We understand each child's strengths, interests and next steps, allowing us to provide timely, personalised support. We celebrate every success, recognising that confidence is built through encouragement, perseverance and meaningful achievement.
Our aim is not simply for children to catch up; it is for them to become confident, independent readers who develop a genuine enjoyment of books and reading.
Developing Expert Teachers of Reading
High-quality teaching is the single most important factor in ensuring children become successful readers. At Helpringham Primary Academy, we are committed to developing knowledgeable, skilled and reflective teachers of reading who continually strive for excellence in their practice.
All staff receive high-quality professional development in the teaching of early reading, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Staff delivering Read Write Inc. receive ongoing training and coaching to ensure that the programme is delivered consistently and with fidelity. This shared understanding ensures that children experience a seamless approach to learning, regardless of who teaches them.
Professional development extends beyond phonics. Staff continually develop their knowledge of children's literature, reading pedagogy and current educational research, including the principles outlined within the Department for Education Reading Framework. This enables teachers to make informed decisions that continually improve reading provision across the school.
Collaboration is central to our approach. Staff regularly share effective practice, observe one another, engage in professional dialogue and reflect upon the impact of their teaching. Coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback support continual professional growth and ensure that the highest standards are maintained.
Leaders monitor the quality of reading provision through lesson observations, learning walks, pupil voice, book scrutiny and assessment information. Monitoring is used to celebrate strengths, identify areas for development and provide appropriate support so that all staff continue to grow as expert teachers of reading.
We recognise that enthusiasm is contagious. Adults throughout our school model a genuine love of reading by sharing books, discussing favourite authors and reading aloud with expression and enjoyment. By demonstrating that reading is valued and celebrated, staff inspire children to become enthusiastic readers themselves.
As educational research and best practice continue to evolve, we remain committed to ongoing professional learning. We embrace opportunities to refine our practice so that every child benefits from the highest quality reading education possible.
Our Commitment to Reading
Reading lies at the heart of life at Helpringham Primary Academy. It is the gateway to learning, creativity, curiosity and future success. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to become a fluent, confident reader who not only has the skills to access the curriculum but also discovers the lifelong pleasure that books can bring.
Through our carefully sequenced curriculum, the consistent implementation of Read Write Inc., high-quality teaching, targeted support and a rich culture of reading for pleasure, we strive to ensure that every child experiences success. From their very first story in Reception to the moment they leave us as independent readers, we nurture children who are curious, resilient and enthusiastic about reading.
Our reading culture extends far beyond the classroom. Whether children are sharing a favourite story in our school library, recommending books to friends in their classroom reading areas, participating in the book voting assemblies, reading at home with their families or acting as Reading Ambassadors, we aim to inspire a community where books are valued, conversations about reading flourish and every child feels proud to call themselves a reader.
At Helpringham Primary Academy, reading is not simply something we teach; it is something we celebrate, champion and cherish. By working together with our children, families, staff and governors, we are building a community of lifelong readers who leave our school ready to embrace the opportunities that reading will bring throughout their lives.
